Visit of the Spata High School to the Mineralogical Museum gaio-ORAMA

Students of Spata High School accompanied by their teacher Mrs. E. Konstantinidou, visited the Mineralogical Museum gaio-ORAMA of the School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, on Wednesday 11 May 2022.

During their visit, the students were informed about the objects of the School, were given a guided tour of the Museum by Mr. L. Tsambra, ETEP, and enriched their knowledge about mineral raw materials and their uses. Then, in the fossil section, Mrs. E. Lykoudi, Dr. EDIP, presented the evolution of species and the role of climate change in it.

Then, PEPPER, our humanoid robot, was waiting for them to discuss about minerals, answer and ask questions and say goodbye with a souvenir photo.

In the second part of the visit, the students played the game “Who wants to be a R(aw) M(aterial) ambassador?”, the design and development of which was based, in part, on the well-known TV game show “Who wants to be a millionaire”. The students were asked, based on their knowledge from school and from the preceded tour, or by choosing the “public help”, i.e. their classmates, to answer 15 questions, of graded difficulty, about Mineral Raw Materials. In the role of the game’s presenter was Apostolos Kourtis, Dr. EDIP, who in his always unique way gave a particularly enjoyable and spicy touch to the game.

Judging by the answers to the evaluation questionnaires filled in by the students at the end of their visit to our Museum, the students left very satisfied, with new knowledge about mineral raw materials, their uses and their necessity in everyday life and in the evolution of man and a new perspective on mining and metallurgical sector.

The game “Who wants to be a R(aw) M(aterial) ambassador?” was developed in the framework of the RM@Schools ESEE project and was presented for the first time, at the European Student Conference, in Bologna, in November 2019.  The game has been developed by M. Perraki, Assoc. Professor, P. Tsangaratos, Dr. EDIP, I.Ilia, Dr. Geologist, and V. Skliros, PhD student.
